did jimi hendrix get his main distorted sound from the gain turned up on the amp?

i know he used fuzz etc but did that main raunchy sound come from the amp gain turned up?…….who are some guitarists that only used the gain and trebble on the amp turned up to get a distorted sound, aside from angus young,early leslie west,ted nugent etc?
